"Taking Care of Our Own"
Girl Scouts Take Action!
Brownie Troop 502, Cadet Troop 968 and Harmony Brownies and Daisy's sent
thank you cards to wounded soldiers at Camp Lejeune where wounded
marines received the cards.

While this time of healing in hospitals and away from home is necessary for
wounded soldiers to recover, it is also a time that many feel despair and
loneliness.  These feelings are worsened when the holiday season is upon us
and while many families are home celebrating Thanksgiving and Christmas,
many soldiers are left feeling forgotten and want nothing more than to return
home after serving many months overseas and still many more months
recovering in a hospital bed or military medical unit on some base thousands of
miles from home with no place to bring family where they can celebrate the
holidays together.

People like the Girl Scouts are sometimes a soldier's best friend!  It takes only
one card or letter to lift the spirits of many soldiers who are so close to home yet
so far away.  These daily cards of praise and thank you's let soldiers know that
America is behind them, they did their service to us and we appreciate what
sacrifices this soldier endured to keep us safe and although he/she will not
fight again for us, we will NEVER forget what this soldier has done for us.

Let's keep our praises and thanks going!  Even though the holidays can be
depressing for our soldiers recovering far from home, I personally know that
everyday is a struggle for our soldiers, whether it's a holiday or not.  Those
cards and visits (when possible) can help a soldier recover and enables them to
put their lives back together that much faster, so send that card, write that letter
of thanks, or shake the hand of the veteran you pass on the street.  Whatever it is
helps, so let us all keep it going through the holidays and even after the season
is gone.  YOU don't realize how much your little effort greatly affects a soldier
recovering or the disabled veteran who is trying to make every day just seem
normal again.

Thank you Girl Scouts Troop 502 and 968 for sending these cards to us for
distribution to our wounded soldiers.  We are always thankful when young
people get involved and want to help make the public more aware of the many
soldiers returning from war.  We are pleased to see young people such as the
Girl Scouts being so considerate and caring (part of the GS Law) of their fellow
men.  It personally brings me pleasure knowing that our children have such
characteristics because our children are our future.
