| It is the VETERAN, not the preacher, who has given us freedom of religion. It is the VETERAN, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the VETERAN, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the VETERAN, not the campus organizer, who has given us freedom to assemble. It is the VETERAN, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. It is the VETERAN, not the politician, who has given us the right to vote. |

| Operation Injured Soldiers Foundation June 2008 Newsletter ______________________________________________________________________ Our eighth event of this year was an Off-Road Poker Run in Baldwin, Michigan. What a day! 33 riders showed up to participate in support of our disabled veterans. With the rains and flooding to the area, we were desperately praying that the trails would be open by the weekend and much to our surprise, our riders enjoyed some muddy trails but to our knowledge, only one got stuck in the mud. The riders from the past two years stopped along the trails to enjoy an ice-cream at one of our stops, others did some shopping with our sponsors at Peacock Unlimited, and others just took in the scenery as they enjoyed their trail blazing in Lake County. After the ride, there was plenty to eat! Lemke and Associates treated us all to dogs, brauts, and burgers. Side dishes included baked beans, potato salad, and slaw with a scrumptious portion of cake, brownies, or cookies. One of wounded soldiers, Sgt. Mike Mills came all the way from Minnesota to ride in the event! It was a pleasure to meet Mike and his family as he was introduced to the riders and given the chance to share his story of survival, how many surgeries it took to get him to today and his goal for tomorrow. The money raised from the event will go to sponsor disabled veterans on sporting or outdoor activities. It was a pleasure working with all the volunteers and members of OIS and we look forward to many more opportunities in the future.
